Oil

Oil is insinuated into our lives, our pocketbooks, our politics, and our consciences.  Here is our take on this ubiquitous substance.

Oiled Paper Lantern With Stencil

By: Theresa Palermo

I used common machine oil to create this translucent paper, applied an acrylic stencil, and built the wooden frame out of balsa wood strips.  Gives a lovely glow with a candle burning inside.

Drillers Daily Report

By: Lois Adam

I was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and grew up in the shadow of Iraq's major oil pumping station, Babba Gurger #1.  This is a copy of the daily driller's report for the day that the well first "blew" on June 30, 1927.   The gush was so strong it took days to cap and all the surrounding towns and landscape were coated in oil.  The copied report is embellished with a picture of the gusher and globs of "oil" made of craft glue and acrylic paint.  Click on the picture to the left for a larger view of the document.

Addicted To Oil

President Bush II admitted to America's "addiction to oil" in his 2007 State of the Union address.  Now, with the economy receeding, the price of oil fluctuating but up, and the environmental crisis finally on the political and public radar screen, it's time for America to get serious about rehab.

Love-Hate Relationship With Oil

Nature uses the properties of oil and water in perfect balance.  This bird feather represents that balance.  Without any oil, a bird's feathers would absorb water and case drowning or hypothermia.  Yet, we have all seen images of birds' fates after tragic oil spills.  This feather is local to South Jersey where our shorebirds have so far been lucky to avoid the devastating consequen6tces of off-shore oil spills.  Click the picture to the left to see the lovely detail in the painting of an iconic South Jersey seagull with an oil tanker on the horizon.

What We Do For Love

I started thinking about this project just as the controversey about the "torture memos" and "torture tapes" were bubbling to the surface.   President Obama had released the memos but declined to release the pictures, arguing that they would invlame hatred from Muslim extremists.  I googled images of Abu Ghraib looking for the iconic picture used in this piece and found, to my horror and shame, hundreds of pictures of mostly naked mostly male prisoners.  Could the ones the President didn't release be any worse?!  I will always see these pictures every time I turn on my car which, hopefully, will be less and less over the years.  These crimes were committed on our watch, in our name.  Shame on us.

Water And Oil Mixed

By: Wanda Kline

My granddaughter and I were doing experiments with mixtures, solutions, and emulsions.  We made this with red water, cooking oil, and glitter.  The glitter is plastic (which is made from oil) and it hangs at the intersection of the oil and water because it is more dense than the oil itself.

Tree of Health Cookies

Monounsaturated fat can lower cholesterol.  Olive oil gives protection from heart attacks and stroke; protects red blood cells from damage; and has anti-cancer properties.  The olive oil and red wine in these cookies contain poly phenals for health.  Rosemary is for rememberance and fidelity.

Oil As Pop Art

I went to Texas when I was 12 years old with a friend.  We stayed in a small town called Pitman.  It was a normal little town with bank, grocery stores, hair dresser, barber shop, butcher and homes.  Everywhere you look there were oil wells pumping on all the lawns and on all the commercial properties.  That night I slept right next to one near my window.  They never stopped.  It was quite a sight and experience.  I will never forget it.
