Plug In

IPODs and Bluetooths (blueteeth?) are just the latest "plug in" craze.  Are we all crazy, or what?  In the intensely electronic age, what does the term "plug in" mean to you?  For Studio Xers, the challenge evoked hilarity and seriousness, along with ... sh-sh-sh the quiet of being unplugged.

Unplugged

The phrase "plug in" brings to mind the constant need for manufactured sound in our culture.  Doctors' offices and supermarkets now blare TV shows.  MP3 and Ipods include plug in speakers with which to fill the surrounding space with sound vibrations.  My piece is in favor of the sounds I prefer.  The sounds of Nature -- unplugged

Plug In To Green
pluginwandacombined.jpg
By: Wanda Kline

My moveable paper sculpture expresses my deep desire that the entire world will figure out how to plug into a green lifestyle, for the benefit of our planet and out children.  With the plug in the out position, the world in the sculpture is not green.  With the plug moved to the in position, the whole world turns green.

Last winter we had an electrical surge in our home, which caused major damage.  After many months and replacement of TVs, computers, appliances, and so much more I feel that someone “socket to me!”

The Bath Tub

For me, the term “plug in” evokes a bathtub.  So, I made a plug in holding “water” and a plug out with an empty cup.

Plug In The Words

What Would Jesus Do?

Two poems -- one serious, one in jest -- express my idea of plugged in.  The first poem was inspired by the stark contrast between an article in the Sunday NY Times (June 29) and an 8 page supplement which appeared in the same paper. The italics represent direct quotes from the supplement.  The second poem uses fantasy and humor touched with the the power of words. Hare Plug

I got to thinking that men don’t seek hair plug therapy very often anymore and, instead, a cosmic shift seems to have occurred by which men with male pattern baldness have decided to proudly shave and wax their heads.  Here, then, is perhaps the last “hare plug” of the 21st century, made from, what else, an ear plug.

If our civilization ever disappears and is later excavated by archeologists, they will find millions and billions and trillions of plugs.  Surely they will thing that these prodlific items were ritualistic religious or sexual icons.  Here is my imagined museum explanation of the sacred object, unearthed in the year 4011.  Click the link below for the scientific deductions made about these mysterious objects.

Balance
plugintheresa.JPG
By: Theresa Palermo

This piece depicts how the human population needs to achieve balance as we become more plugged in.  On the one hand (left) are the resources of the planet:  plants, animals, water, air, land, fuel.  On the other hand (right) are the needs of the ever growing human population:  energy, water, shelter, air, food.

Pazzo Pasta (Crazy Pasta)

These are pictures of the electronic wire hodge podge in my home.   I'm a professional cook and this tangle reminded me of pasta.  Crazy pasta.  Pazzo pasta (written in egg noodles).
